Going to the Movies in Baltimore 1950s-1970s: An Affectionate Memoir

David Kaye fell in love with movies at an early age and spent much of the next thirty years or so going to movie theaters in and around Baltimore. He recalls the wide variety of theaters that he came to know and love - from the neighbourhood cinemas to the downtown picture palaces to the suburban multiplexes, many of which are now long gone - and some of the more memorable movies and stars that he grew up with. The movies both entertained and influenced him as a young boy in the 1950s, an impressionable teenager in the swinging 1960s, and an adult in the permissive 1970s. This is both a wistful and insightful personal account of that golden age of going to the movies.

David Kaye was born in Baltimore in 1948. He first started to write short stories in elementary school and progressed to writing the scripts for his high school's Christmas plays and annual spring musicals. Having been bitten by the theater bug, he went on to work in several regional repertory theaters as an assistant stage manager, a sometime actor, and the author of workshop productions. Later on, he wrote film and music reviews for the Chesapeake Weekly Review. Since moving to the UK in 1984, he has written plays for BBC Radio, revue skits, and occasional magazine articles. Some of his poems were translated for publication in a Russian poetry magazine. He has recently returned to writing with renewed inspiration producing several novellas as well as a couple of books of personal recollections. He now lives near London with his English wife Diane and their eccentric cat Willow.

When The Going Gets Tough.....It Makes a Good Bar Story!:

The best bar stories evolve from crises and the opportunities they create, so here is a collection of my favourite misadventures. This collection of such exploits, arising from my lifelong quest for adventure travel and adrenalin includes caving, climbing, biking, hiking and backpacking in over 70 countries. What sets this book apart is that it describes the extraordinary adventures of an ordinary man: how many authors have squeezed maggots out of their eyebrows and been peed on by silverback mountain gorillas? Most books of this genre either focus on a specific adventurous activity or on a single trip. The diversity of this book will appeal to aspirant adventurers and armchair thrill-seekers alike, whether they are inexperienced students about to embark on a gap year or seasoned travellers spending their offspring's inheritance. Learn from my mistakes Be inspired by my successes Make every second count!

This book recounts Ben's adventures as a single man between leaving school and getting married. He has been a teacher of Geology and Geography since 1989. He is still travelling, mostly leading groups of teenagers on month-long expeditions in Africa, South America and South East Asia. These adventures will be covered in his next book.

The Seventh Wife

Anton Sebich, the eternally hopeful hero, had seven wives, sells divorce insurance and moderates the calamity of modern civilization on his own radio show.

In chatty, fast-paced prose, this lively picaresque novel captures the bewilderment and naive exuberance of newcomers to America's shores. Anton Sebich, a middle-aged insurance agent turned radio-show host, whose six former wives and 10 children have left him bankrupt, receives a distress call from his first wife. Their oldest child has mysteriously fled the U.S. and is somewhere within the former Soviet Union. Aided by his former father-in-law, a cat-food magnate, Anton sets off on a yacht across the high seas to bring back his daughter. High-spirited run-ins with sea pirates and German terrorists are punctuated by Anton's reminiscences about his disastrous marriages. Ever an optimist, Anton immediately hooks up with Melada, a young Russian woman who joins him and his crew as a translator. As Anton plunges into Russian society with Melada at his side, the author pulls out all the stops, slyly satirizing the whole of the Russian literary canon. Continuing the search for his daughter, Anton progresses ever deeper into the Russian countryside--and falls ever deeper in love with Melada. Moscovit's broad humor keenly depicts people who straddle two cultures, and the inevitable mix-ups that occur when those cultures collide. Moscovit (a pseudonym) was a professor of thermodynamics in Leningrad; this novel, the third of his works to be translated into English, was a bestseller in Russia.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Anton Sebich is a broken man, but when his daughter disappears, he engineers an ocean-crossing rescue effort beleaguered by would-be kidnappers, hijackers, pirates, bureaucrats, and his former wives. Moscovit (the samizdat pseudonym used by Igor Yefimov) uses his zany cast of characters, the tragicomic journey from America to Russia, and the interspersed texts of Anton's radio broadcasts to lampoon multiple cultures and dozens of lifestyles. Nothing escapes Moscovit's capacity for skewering the ridiculous. This talented Russian's latest work is a comedy, mystery, adventure, romance, and satire rolled into one and peppered with relentless sly social commentary reminiscent of Bulgakov at his best. His highly entertaining and intelligent novel will appeal to all audiences but especially to those who find modern culture to be a suitable target for laughter. Highly recommended.
- Ruth M. Ross, Olympic Coll. Lib., Bremerton, Wash.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This novel is ambitious only in length, as Moscovit (The Judgment Day Archives, not reviewed) fails to deliver much in the way of character, compelling storylines, or a real reason to keep reading. It follows the wanderings and travails of Anton, an angst-ridden man who has been around the marriage-and-family block a few too many times. As he reminisces about his many exes and tries to reconstruct some sense of who he has been in his life, he works toward something of a resolution with his restless heart. His many children, for whom he has been at best an absent father, are for him a great unresolved collection of relationships that could have been or legacies that have not worked out. For most of the story, Anton is caught up in a quest for something beyond self-pity and a ruinous lifestyle. To him, his former spouses and children are mostly nameless, with ``Wife -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The Ivory Crocodile

Discover Great New Writers Program, 1996. Finalist, PEN Center USA West 1997 Literary Awards. "Drew's real subject is landscape, internal and geographic--an exploration of the ways in which Nicole seeks acceptance of herself as African, as benevolent, as self-reliant."--The New York Times Book Review "Very highly recommended."--CHOICE

Set in the fictional Central African country of Tambala, this engaging first novel is narrated by Nicole, a young American whose naive idealism collides with the realities of postcolonial, post-Cold War Africa. Recent college grad Nicole decides to return to the continent in which she was raised when her father was a government employee in Guinea. She signs on as a teacher of English in AfricEd, a Peace Corps-like organization. Her journey into the heart of Tambala turns into a hard road to maturity. Ultimately, this is a novel of disillusionment as Nicole's initial desire to be accepted by the Tambalans yields to her increasing awareness of her own "otherness" and inability to affect change in her adoptive village. The teacher she falls in love with is really an Angolan freedom fighter; the young girl she nurtures as her assistant in a family-planning clinic becomes pregnant. The American idealist thwarted by an un-ideal world is not a new story, but Drew carefully articulates the complexity of managing cultural differences, and she understands?but does not herself succumb to?the romantic temptations that initially mislead Nicole.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

YA. Nicole Spark spent her childhood in Africa as the daughter of an American diplomat, and she longs to recapture the nostalgia that overtakes her following her mother's death, her brother's wanderlust, and her father's withdrawal. After graduating from college, the young woman travels to Mampungu, an isolated bush post in fictional Tambala, as an English teacher with AfricEd. She wants to become a part of the native people but cannot escape her white skin and her Western heritage. She meets Mitch, a burly medic employed by an American contractor; Bwadi, another teacher who cannot escape his Angolan past; Diabelle, a young student who strives for the freedom that Nicole exudes. Nicole urges her to reach for more than a future as a village wife and involves her in a Family Planning Project that promises a future job in the city of Kimpiri. When Diabelle becomes pregnant, she overdoses on chloraquine and dies. Nicole leaves Africa, a wiser, more mature young woman. By looking at African life through a Western eye and questioning what is seen and experienced, Drew lends immediate understanding to why it is impossible to force one person's culture onto another individual's way of life.?Dottie Kraft, formerly at Fairfax County Public Schools, VA
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Born and raised in Africa, Nickie Spark vows to return after her father quits the foreign service and brings his family to the U.S. She fantasizes about the Africa of painted faces, native rituals, and villagers dancing to drums. Entering a foreign service organization herself after college, Nickie is assigned to a school in a central African nation called Tambala. She works immediately to offset any stigma attached to being a white American by socializing underneath a mango tree with Mpovi, the school principal's wife; donning a pagne, which all the women wear; and singing with the local choir. She also assists with a birth control survey at the clinic. Yet, things fall apart: her protective counseling of the fetching student Diabelle backfires with Diabelle's pregnancy, and her challenging relationship with Bwadi, an Angolan refugee, leads to the theft of her beloved camera. She comes to realize that her romanticized sense of the continent is as false and hollow as the ivory crocodile knickknacks she once treasured. Jennifer Henderson

From Here To Paternity: The Diary of A Pregnant Man

NEW EDITION with a foreword by the author. Reviews of FROM HERE TO PATERNITY: “If you've just found out you're pregnant, go buy this book today for both yourself and your partner. 5 stars.” “I've worked my way through a few of these dad-to-be books. This by far is the very best.” “One of the best guides we bought. Fab!” “Extremely helpful. This book is a good read and is very funny in parts.” “Brilliant. In addition to being very funny and well-written in a diary format, this book is packed with practical information, useful tips and helps translate much of the medical jargon. Hearing me laugh while reading it, my wife became jealous as she struggled with the textbook-style pregnancy books - in the end she read the book as well and really enjoyed it.” “I loved this book...and when I give it back to my husband, who was reading it, I'm sure he will say the same. I have never laughed out loud or cried out loud with such frequency through one book. The story is so very familiar, but told with such wit that it really is uplifting - so refreshing after months of reading Gina and What to Expect.” “Heart-warming, funny and insightful.” “Realistic, witty and heartfelt. A great read for all dads-to-be. At times it’s hilariously funny.” “Informative and funny. Would deffo recommend for all those first-time dads out there.” “It is a really good book - a diary kept by a pregnant woman's boyfriend throughout her pregnancy - but is very honest and deals with some difficult issues. I'm now at the end of my pregnancy and with the benefit of hindsight I can see that much of what he records in his diary is accurate, frequently funny and probably universal.” “I originally bought this book for my husband, but wound up stealing it when my own pregnancy books got a bit dull. From beginning to end, it charts without apology the intimate ups-and-downs of a modern London couple. Andrew's style is reliable and witty - he makes you feel like they are a couple you've always been friends with. You laugh with their joys...” “I bought this for my fiance. He loves it. It's honest, funny and touching...”
