There's so much to do locally, from wildlife parks to adventure and activity centres, and it's all listed in one handy book. The book is packed with full colour photo's from around the area, and in easy to use sections. It also has interesting facts, 10 top tips on things to do, and what you can experience for free in the area. There is a childcare and schools section with listings of local providers to help with choosing the best care for your child. It has a support section with useful contacts, on parenting, teenagers, travelling, computer use, healthcare, employment and housing. The city of Cambridge is comprehensively covered, with everything from what to do on a rainy day to where to go for a family friendly meal. However, the book also includes Ely, Huntingdon, St Ives, Newmarket, Peterborough and the surrounding area. There is inspiration for what to do on a day out to London and a holiday in East Anglia too. You won't know how you lived without it!

Everyone loves humour and having a good laugh. Just open this book whenever you feel a pick-me-up is needed or simply want a good laugh. The jokes are slanted towards open-minded adults and are not suitable for children. There are twelve chapters in the book - each one discusses a humourous segment of society. Being a parent is a lifetime event and there are few guarantees. Nobody can foretell the future. We can only do our best and try to be optimistic about the outcome. At the end of the day whether by destiny, fortune, or accident the question remains; why have babies? Perhaps ultimately we do so because they will initiate a ­brighter ­outlook for generations to come.

This book is dedicated to our beautiful son Lyndon and our daughter Sherrie, our son-in-law Peter who is like another son to us, our adorable grandchildren who I could not be more proud of and most outstandingly, to my gorgeous husband Nigel, my very best friend, my soul mate and right arm, who has stood by me through thick and thin, with ­everlasting love. From the bottom of my heart I sincerely hope you will enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed writing it. I would have liked something similar to read as a young mum, but could not find anything along the same lines. You will never discover all of the answers to child rearing in a book, but with knowledge comes strength. May each of you have a long and productive life. Take each day, one step at a time and may all your problems be little ones. Remember, you cannot buy memories, you have to make them. Love each other, hold hands with your neighbours and love the life that you have been given. And so as another chapter of your life begins may your God go with you. Mostly Disapointing, Lacking Major Ports of Call

I made this last minute purchase becasue I had not adequatly prepped for my med cruise. One positive is that the Roo recommendations were quick and easy find. Unfortunatly, the book did not cover half of my ports of call including beautuiful Chania - on the island of Crete, Greece; Bodrum, Turkey - a huge tourism port; and Kusadasi, Turkey - the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus. For Istanbul the guide did have good advice to stroll from Taksim Square to the Galata tower but lacked the tip to take the oldest subway in the world on the way back back to avoid the steep climb and just for the experience of it. (http://www.wittistanbul.com/magazine/how-to-avoid-the-steep-climb-to-taksim-or-cihangir/) The guide also lacked the tip that from the cruise port, all city destinations are up a steep grade so don't try it on foot. Think of San Francisco grades but steeper. In all you get what you pay for. Next time I will be less frugal and get a name brand guide.

Great book, too many volunteer advertisements

I was searching for a book that I could relate to since I'm not in my twenties anymore, or even thirties for that matter. This has a lot of good information and I'm finding it very useful for planning my travels.

My only criticism is with regard to all of the volunteer opportunities they've pasted on many pages throughout the book for which people must pay in order to participate. I can only assume that the writers/publishers of this book are receiving gratuities for doing this. However, in my research I've found that these companies are not all that they seem in these advertisements or their websites and I encourage anyone considering that route to do his/her research before committing and paying thousands of dollars to volunteer somewhere else in the world.

All in all, this book was a good investment for references but you can obtain the same information and more with enough dedication and time spent searching the internet.

The "bible" of travel sabbaticals

Griffith's well-rounded mix of travel ideas, inspiration, advice, travel resources, and case studies should be beneficial to anybody who considers taking a sabbatical. The books has even more value to you if your travel experience is limited. Griffith calls her book "the most comprehensive, practical guide to taking a career break", and at least with regard to travel and the kind of travel (adventure, charity/volunteering, etc.), she is right. The book contains some advertisements by third parties, but they actually enhance the book. The book seems to be updated frequently. The slightly European perspective is refreshing because many travel resources listed are not the ones you might find in American books. Since travel is a big and very professionally organized industry in Europe, her resource lists should be very valuable to you.

There Is A Lot Of Information Between These Covers

Every parent thinks it, I wish there was a manual that came home with the baby. We have this beautiful baby and some of us have no idea what to do once our baby is brought home from the hospital. then we find that babies were way easier than kids. Kids are a whole other group. They now think and talk for themselves and we are challenged in a whole other way so I loved the title The Instruction Manual for Kids.

I love reading. I also love reading books about things I am interested in. I am interested in my kids and being the best parent I could be so I was eager to open this fun cover book and jump in. I sat down on the couch and opened it the words are small, the margins are small the headings are small. It seemed like a whole lot of reading before I even started.

While there are some really interesting sections like the nutritional requirements and that kids need water to live as well as the keep it super simple (Kiss Principal) idea which is don't over control things (which was a problem for me as a new mom); I felt that it the layout was a little different I would have enjoyed it more.

Kerri definitely covers a lot of interesting information and re-opens my parent mind to things that I believe but have put aside for a moment every once in a while like The Rights Of Childhood. Basically how kids have the right to be a child, run around and play games, laugh loud, cry, etc. It is how I parent but every once in a while you need the gentle reminder in the stress of your day.

The other section I wish more people would read was called Keep Your Language Clear and Polite. I think this is something that should be given to every parent. I remember my sister-in-law commenting on how polite I was to my kids. I would knock on their door even when they were 3 or 4 and say, can I come in or ask them to pick something up and with a please and thank you. It wasn't something I consciously thought about but if I wanted them to be polite I needed to show them how.

You can get a lot of prospective from this wise parent who is kind enough to put it all down in one place for us to read.

Parents -this book is for you!

The Instruction Manual for Kids - Parent's Edition seems to cover all the topics parents could possibly need, ranging from before they give birth until children reach adulthood. As the parent of 4 children (very close in age), Kerri has done an impressive job creating a user-friendly parenting textbook - complete with personal stories - to educate parents, calm their fears and inspire them to be the best parents and mentors they can be. She touches upon physical, emotional and even psychological topics that benefit both parent and child, boy or girl. This is a book every parent needs for their personal library. I highly recommend it!

After reading this book I gained a much greater perspective of how to manage and build my parenting skills. You can definitely tell that this book was written by an experienced parent. I am much wiser for reading this. I like the little personal stories - they help me to relate to my own situation and give me hope that I can be the best parent I can be for my kids.

Great London Strategy

The Lain's deal with the question of 'London for Families' in the manner that a company would view a potential new venture. What are the positives, negatives, risks, rewards, and ways of maximizing returns? Approaching the problem like any good management consultant, they provide guidance for generally WHAT to do; but are light on how to do it. This book is devoid of references to web sites (even in the 2000 edition), phone numbers, and other ways of actually determining the specifics of HOW to do it, once you decide what to do. And, like any good management consultant, there is some promotion here. Just try and get apartments for the $ they reference and you will die trying (except in off locations, and in off-seasons, which is not well explained in the book). None-the-less, there is no better book I have found for planning the generalities of your trip. And this advice is not trivial; it is both unique and valuable. For example, if not for the admonitions of the Lain's, we never would have considered renting a London flat, and we have been to London many times. That advice alone, not unique to travel books, but forcefully stated like no other on the shelf, paid for the book many times over. Buy this book for strategy; it is well worth the investment. But for tactics, HOW to do what the Lain's advise, rely on other books, (Take the Kids London, Cadogan.... is the best I have found)

Everything a parent needs to know!

This book is wonderful! It covers everything, including choosing a place to stay (hotel? B&B? apartment?), what to pack, and what to see when you finally get to London. One of my favorite parts is an hour-by-hour list of how to spend your first half a day in London.
There are chapters on favorite family attractions, organized by type (museums, history, theatre, etc.) for your whole family to read. There is even a checklist of these attractions -- every family member can check off their top choices, so that planning the trip becomes a family experience, too.
The authors clearly understand what travelling with children is like - they advise readers to leave time to go to the park, not to overschedule - and even what to do if someone gets lost (one great suggestion: everyone should carry taxi fare and a piece of paper with the address of the hotel). We are planning our first overseas trip with our three children, and I feel so much more capable after reading this book. THANK YOU to Larry and Michael Lain. A must-buy!

Close but no British Cigar.

This book was good for those planning the trip from home. The accomodations advise was wonderful. Once you get to London, though, this book is virtually useless it is so general. For specific details of what to do, where to go, what age group will be best served, and where to eat while in that particular neighborhood, I say get the Cadogan book. I had it in my pocket for 10 days in London with a 9 yr old and we had a blast. Caveat for all books: call the restaurant or event before going. No book can be THAT up to date and a trip off-season or on- to a defunct restaurant can be a real precious time waster. CADOGAN rules.

An exciting Bible Study book, teaching children and teens, how to become a Christian and can be used to witness to their friends. This book is also available in Spanish.

This is the best book I have seen for youngsters on explaining Christianity, simple yet profound. At our church thirteen children commited themselves to Christ after studying "Being A Christian." Seven children in our church became commited Christians after reading you book "Being A Christian." We printed 2,000 Romanian copies of "Being a Christian." This book is very helpful to explain to children just what a christian is. The chapters are short and easy to explain. The questions at the end of each chapter summaries the content very nicely.

Balanced, Basic and Biblical

"Being a Christian" by David Walters is a well thought out workbook style edition for kids. It is kid friendly with a high gloss cover, large varying, pink/purple/black print and cute cartoon illustrations.

The explanation of the Christian life directs the reader to think and understand without corny Christianese. It includes scripture verses ( some with explanatory paraphrases), stories to help teach and a "quiz" at the end of each "chapter". It is not a lengthy workbook but it packs in powerful Biblical facts. It even provides a good representation of the Holy Spirit's role in the Christian life.
One thing to note, it is clear this book is written for kids. It speaks about the child's need to choose to believe God for salvation and not rely on parents or family church going as his/her identity as a Christian. This is an exciting challenge which kids need to hear so that as they enter teen years and adulthood they have a personal faith in a personal Savior.
Also, please note contrary to the one low review there is no judgmental "black&white" teaching other than the obvious; there's only one way to heaven. If that is upsetting to someone then its doubtful that person has experienced the grace of God herself.
Don't hesitate to purchase this book if you're looking for a simple, clear way to reach a kid with the gospel.

EO can be dangerous for kids and consumption is a big no no. This book makes that suggestion right at the get go. This books offers advice that could be very harmful, I deleted it.
