Now an experienced xrosmonaut (a person who travels through time) Danny is shocked when there is a mal-function in the systems that control his time travelling adventures. He is wrenched back in time to Lichfield in 671.The time of the Anglo-Saxons is not a good time in which to be stranded! It is the depths of winter, wolves hunt in packs, Danny cannot understand what the grim-faced people are saying, and his phone with its futuristic adaptations is dead. I bought this book hoping to locate tourest attractions and not so touristy things to do with kids.
The book is like a yellow pages for kids with minimal descriptions, lack of concept ideas, or day planning.
For instance, the wonderful Stanley Park is covered in less than 1 page. If I didn't know about the Capilano Bridge, a traveler could miss it reading her book. It is covered in the neighbooorhoood section with 1 paragraph.
However, if you want to know about the parks or day care in each part of the city, then you have found the book for you.
This bundle book is a compilation of four of KidCaps top selling history books; it is the first in a two-part volume. The first volume presents the following subjects in an easy to understand format that kids love: *Jamestown *The Continental Convention *The Louisiana Purchase *The Lewis and Clark Expedition

This is a book for those parents blessed with perfect kids - you know: the ones that sit still, listen, behave, and obey impeccably all the time. The kids which all we folks with 'real' kids envy, or rather, secretly suspect to be drugged by their parents.
I am from the UK originally and I know from 1st hand kid experience that about 50% of these activities would be wholly unsuitable for any kid. Many or most of the others would require a freakishly compliant kid for the parents to escape without busting a blood vessel. As a local it was almost laughable how different my memories were from the author's promises, or how my expectations of an event/activity/place varied from the author's. Needless to say we didn't bother using valuable baggage weight when we went back to the UK.
Expect very few success stories for 'real' kids on 'real' days.

This book has extensive information for travel with kids in almost every corner of every continent. Full of pictures, it is written in a bright, accessible style. Disappointingly, emphasis is on places they are likely to have heard of (Orlando, Italy, Australia), rather than places their parents might simply wish to take them, and on beaches and adenaline-charged activities rather than on museums and quiet activities. There is really nothing wrong with this focus, except that, to a large extent, it explains the obvious. This book also has a presumption of dysfunction about the dynamics of traveling families, and is particularly ugly in its references to teenagers. Perhaps the author is just being funny, but my wife and I read several of the descriptions and just sort of looked at each other disgustedly (i.e., we didn't laugh). The author apparently feels that the depth of a teenager's travel-savvy extends no farther than recreational shopping or finding an adrenaline-rush. Quote from the section on France: "Fashion-conscious teenage girls will enjoy browsing the shops [of Paris], and might even tolerate mum and dad tagging along-- as long as they bring their credit cards." Also, on Berlin and Amsterdam: "Of course, you probably won't get teenagers within a hundred miles of either Amsterdam or Berlin unless you tempt them with... the promise of retail heaven." On Asia: "If your teenagers are more into retail therapy than adrenaline abuse, take them to Dubai..." etc., etc., etc. The pitch of this one-note song only makes me wish for a different book geared toward families with tots/children/teens who DON'T view a family trip as an occasion to incubate brattiness. The author clearly expects much less from his readers' children than he does from his own, who are "fantastic little travelers, always happy to confront new challenges."
On a side note, it is curious how many places are simply excluded from the book, presumably because they are not as interesting to children. But isn't the purpose of the book to help parents travel with children to places where child-focused activities are more elusive? For example, there is nothing about the American Midwest -- never mind Chicago with its Sears Tower and world-famous aquarium and science museum. While several countries (such as France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey) get detailed chapters to themselves, many countries, such as Japan and Russia, are altogether excluded.

I bought this book based on all of the very positive reviews (at Amazon.co.uk). Unfortunately I leave the purchase a little disappointed. The book is pretty, with lot's of lovely pictures to inspire you, but also very generic. A very quick scan of a Google search result for family friendly holidays will bring up all the content in here and then some.
To make matters worse, there are blindingly obvious mistakes throughout the book, but even in the opening top 10 lists. I don't know whether this is bad editing or if the author simply browsed a few websites and slapped together some lists.
Examples: pg. 22-23 list the Explora en Atacama hotel as a top 10 for pampering parents. Sure, I have to agree, it looks great and is located in the driest desert on earth, a harsh yet exciting environment. But the picture on page 23 shows a photo of the Explora en Patagonia, more than 3100km away in sub-Antarctic Chile. If I booked based on the photos I would be pretty bummed out when I turned up in a desert and not in the glorious mountains I expected.
Another example is found on the Switzerland page, where a top ten recommendation is to meet Peter the Goatherd in Savognin, a link to the Savognin Tourism website is included. There is no information on this excursion to be found on the website. Perhaps because the Peter and Heidi stories are based well north of here.

Merely giving a website address (to the home page) and leaving the reader to search for the content can lead to disappointment.

Again, it just gives off the impression that the rest of the book is littered with the same sort of low-quality research.
As I said, it is pretty and will still make a nice coffee-table item to keep visitors amused. But I will not be relying on the content of this book to inspire my next holiday. A quick search online will yield a lot more, fresher information.

This is a great must-have for those who are planning to take their kids on a trip to England. Whether this is your first time or a repeat visit, this book is invaluable.
This excellent Cadogan Guidebook has chock full of up-to-date information on family-friendly sites. This includes attraction descriptions, costs, hours of operation and tips on how to get there. There are also tips on whether sites have special amenities for babies/toddlers. Each section (chapter) is divided according to geographic location - London, the southwest, south, Thames Valley, etc. The authors also rate their favorite or highly recommended spots. As a frequent visitor to the UK, I marvel at how much ground they cover. Everything from gardens, historic buildings, palaces, castles, zoos, parks, amusement centers, beaches, kid-friendly restaurants and shopping areas are covered in great detail.
My only complaint with this book is that it is almost completely text - no pictures and few maps. However, the book itself is almost 2 inches thick which really does show how much ground this book covers.
This book is an excellent resource for what to see and do on your upcoming trip. If you're into visuals, then I recommend that you get this book and the Eyewitness Great Britain guide. If you're planning to spend most of your time in London and only a couple of days in the countryside, then pick up the London version of this book instead. However, if you're planning to spend a lot of time trekking around London and the English countryside, this and the Eyewitness Guide combined should put you on your way to planning and enjoying a fun-filled family trip to England.

This is the edition that my local library has, and it's the book I'm going to review. However, I have purchased the newer, 3rd Edition which shall be more up-to-date, one hopes.
I found this book useful. The author definitely has children in mind, although his exact advice isn't available for every age-range on every topic. He advises parent's of little ones to be careful in old trains as the windows can go all the way down. And he warns people that charter planes are a terrible choice for families, but advice on which site is best for which age group is frequently absent.
Still, the author does give an idea of what hands-on activities are available, and that's very, very helpful.
The book is written with a good dose of humor, which makes it a pleasure to read, and he tackles areas of Britain in a logical fashion, giving examples of what a day tour might involve. He talks about Passes (to save money) and restaurants, and the usual sorts of things that travel guides include.
Surprisingly, there was nothing about dress, nor much about hotels. BUT I'm glad I read this book --it gave me lots of idea for organizing my own expedition-- as is indicated by the fact that I purchased the newer edition. (I'm hoping he has another coming out this year or next.)

We have two toddlers, ages 3 & 4. We take this book whenever we set out on a trip around England. It's so helpful to find child-friendly restaurants (not all pubs will allow children because of alcohol license restrictions), free parks, and fun activities for the kids. Let's face it, even though I could spend a day touring a museum or castle, that's not exactly the kids' favorite activity. We've found petting zoos, nature parks, playgrounds and great restaurants with this book. It's easy to reference and not a bad size for throwing in a tote bag. It's made our days out much more child friendly!

Every parent thinks it, I wish there was a manual that came home with the baby. We have this beautiful baby and some of us have no idea what to do once our baby is brought home from the hospital. then we find that babies were way easier than kids. Kids are a whole other group. I love reading. I also love reading books about things I am interested in. I am interested in my kids and being the best parent I could be so I was eager to open this fun cover book and jump in. I sat down on the couch and opened it the words are small, the margins are small the headings are small. It seemed like a whole lot of reading before I even started.
While there are some really interesting sections like the nutritional requirements and that kids need water to live as well as the keep it super simple (Kiss Principal) idea which is don't over control things (which was a problem for me as a new mom); I felt that it the layout was a little different I would have enjoyed it more.
Kerri definitely covers a lot of interesting information and re-opens my parent mind to things that I believe but have put aside for a moment every once in a while like The Rights Of Childhood. Basically how kids have the right to be a child, run around and play games, laugh loud, cry, etc. It is how I parent but every once in a while you need the gentle reminder in the stress of your day.
The other section I wish more people would read was called Keep Your Language Clear and Polite. I think this is something that should be given to every parent. I remember my sister-in-law commenting on how polite I was to my kids. I would knock on their door even when they were 3 or 4 and say, can I come in or ask them to pick something up and with a please and thank you. It wasn't something I consciously thought about but if I wanted them to be polite I needed to show them how.
You can get a lot of prospective from this wise parent who is kind enough to put it all down in one place for us to read.

The Instruction Manual for Kids - Parent's Edition seems to cover all the topics parents could possibly need, ranging from before they give birth until children reach adulthood. As the parent of 4 children (very close in age), Kerri has done an impressive job creating a user-friendly parenting textbook - complete with personal stories - to educate parents, calm their fears and inspire them to be the best parents and mentors they can be. She touches upon physical, emotional and even psychological topics that benefit both parent and child, boy or girl. This is a book every parent needs for their personal library. I highly recommend it!

After reading this book I gained a much greater perspective of how to manage and build my parenting skills. You can definitely tell that this book was written by an experienced parent. I am much wiser for reading this. I like the little personal stories - they help me to relate to my own situation and give me hope that I can be the best parent I can be for my kids.

How, how is it possible that a book called "Europe for kids..." would offer only 20 pages to the countries of Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Swizerland? No, not 20 pages per country...20 pages IN TOTAL! Germany, Austria, and Switzerland easily deserve 20 pages (or more) a piece!
If you are looking for a guidebook to the touristy spots your children might enjoy, this may not be the book for you. If you want a book which will offer you prices and opening hours to attractions this is also not the book for you; very rarely are either offered. This book appears to have *some* helpful information and a few age specific pointers; it would be a great resource from your local library when you begin to plan your trip. When you want to get down to the meat of planning, you won't find a lot here. There is simply not enough substance here to justify the $18 price (especially when you consider Central Europe is but a whisper in this book!); surely at that price you are really paying for the beautiful photos.
On the pro side, each chapter has children's book suggestions for each country/region. Would like to have seen a longer list as notable books were left off the lists! Also enjoyable were the children's Top 10 lists for several countries. We will certainly be referring back to these. Finally, it was nice to see the inclusion of some recipes for each country. Although any google search could locate similar recipes, having them in one location as you prepare for the trip is handy. This book also has a decent amount of information (comparatively) on Turkey and Eastern Europe with kids.
This book was published in the UK. If you are in the US and considering this book, note that all prices given are either in pounds or euro. Also, most of the travel agencies listed are based in the UK.

This book seriously lacks specifics. At best it offers rough ideas for things to do, but it is far too general. Lots of nice colour pictures taking up precious space, but I don't need someone else's beautiful vacation photos when I plan to go for myself. Hardly any useful maps, brief descriptions, and whole geographic areas left out. The author admits as much in the book, but even then it is a little thin on content.
As a North American, I was also a little put off by the book's very UK-centric nature: aside from the lingo, there is a strong focus on Britain/Ireland and sun-seeker destinations like Greece, Spain, and Italy. There is almost nothing about Germany and Switzerland. The different destinations and particulars for newborns and toddlers versus teenagers are barely touched upon at the start of each chapter. Again, lots of generalities and few details.
Overall, a waste of money for the price.

Arrive as promises and the book is in great conditions!
