Growing up in Europe, I have always been fascinated with the Wild West. So when it came time to decide where and when "Max Nerds" may travel into history, the tragic figure of Billy the Kid alias Henry McCarty came to mind. After reading several books about Billy and trying to decide at what time Max should meet him, I learned about Warm Springs Apache Chief Nana who, during the summer of 1881, embarked on a vengeance war against the U.S. Army.

Chief Nana was nearly 80 years old and took a dozen warriors 3,000 miles across New Mexico, never to be caught. Naturally, I wanted Nana in my story.

In the spring of 2015 I spent 10 days crisscrossing New Mexico to travel in the footsteps of my protagonist and the story's main characters. I visited Fort Sumner, Lincoln, Chloride, Silver City, explored the Rio Grande and spent one entire day, driving 48 miles across the Gila wilderness, the former home of the Warm Springs Apaches or Red Paint People.

I hope you'll enjoy the story as much as I did writing it.

Going to the Movies in Baltimore 1950s-1970s: An Affectionate Memoir

David Kaye fell in love with movies at an early age and spent much of the next thirty years or so going to movie theaters in and around Baltimore. He recalls the wide variety of theaters that he came to know and love - from the neighbourhood cinemas to the downtown picture palaces to the suburban multiplexes, many of which are now long gone - and some of the more memorable movies and stars that he grew up with. The movies both entertained and influenced him as a young boy in the 1950s, an impressionable teenager in the swinging 1960s, and an adult in the permissive 1970s. This is both a wistful and insightful personal account of that golden age of going to the movies.

David Kaye was born in Baltimore in 1948. He first started to write short stories in elementary school and progressed to writing the scripts for his high school's Christmas plays and annual spring musicals. Having been bitten by the theater bug, he went on to work in several regional repertory theaters as an assistant stage manager, a sometime actor, and the author of workshop productions. Later on, he wrote film and music reviews for the Chesapeake Weekly Review. Since moving to the UK in 1984, he has written plays for BBC Radio, revue skits, and occasional magazine articles. Some of his poems were translated for publication in a Russian poetry magazine. He has recently returned to writing with renewed inspiration producing several novellas as well as a couple of books of personal recollections. He now lives near London with his English wife Diane and their eccentric cat Willow.

Mostly Disapointing, Lacking Major Ports of Call

I made this last minute purchase becasue I had not adequatly prepped for my med cruise. One positive is that the Roo recommendations were quick and easy find. Unfortunatly, the book did not cover half of my ports of call including beautuiful Chania - on the island of Crete, Greece; Bodrum, Turkey - a huge tourism port; and Kusadasi, Turkey - the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus. For Istanbul the guide did have good advice to stroll from Taksim Square to the Galata tower but lacked the tip to take the oldest subway in the world on the way back back to avoid the steep climb and just for the experience of it. (http://www.wittistanbul.com/magazine/how-to-avoid-the-steep-climb-to-taksim-or-cihangir/) The guide also lacked the tip that from the cruise port, all city destinations are up a steep grade so don't try it on foot. Think of San Francisco grades but steeper. In all you get what you pay for. Next time I will be less frugal and get a name brand guide.

This book is full of a good variety of basic and detailed travel tips..I think they are very obvious things if you have traveled frequently...nothing new here. I was hoping for DEALS and tips on getting the best ones, so i am only giving this a 3. But it is more of a guide to taking the most prepared trip ever. Not the best price...or destination.
Reccommened if this is the first time you Fly, Cruise, Leave the country, or are traveling with kids or a group, ..this will have information that is helpful( weather, currency, safety including checklist and extra websites.)..

A book for perfect kids (are your kids perfect?)

This is a book for those parents blessed with perfect kids - you know: the ones that sit still, listen, behave, and obey impeccably all the time. The kids which all we folks with 'real' kids envy, or rather, secretly suspect to be drugged by their parents.

I am from the UK originally and I know from 1st hand kid experience that about 50% of these activities would be wholly unsuitable for any kid. Many or most of the others would require a freakishly compliant kid for the parents to escape without busting a blood vessel. As a local it was almost laughable how different my memories were from the author's promises, or how my expectations of an event/activity/place varied from the author's. Needless to say we didn't bother using valuable baggage weight when we went back to the UK.

Expect very few success stories for 'real' kids on 'real' days.

A Year on the Streets: A Classic Indictment of Modern

Ten years of working in Soup Kitchens has given the Author a privileged glimpse into another world. It is a world of poverty and degradation, lived out on a daily basis, by people forced to live rough on the streets. Follow him on his daily journey throughout the year, in one of the most deprived towns in England.

Radical Rooney was born and bred on the Falls Road in Belfast. As a teenager he immigrated to England to find work, but initially had to live rough under Clacton Pier, for six months. He went to London and had dozens of different jobs over the years, but eventually went to Israel to spend a year working mostly in a kibbutz. He later spent a similar time working in the United States. Over the years he developed an interest in writing, and in Poetry, and has published 'the Century Collection' This is a comprehensive collection of one hundred poems and haiku, and is readily available. He acquired strong photographic skills and has had exhibitions to his credit. He was a Semi-finalist in the 2010 Hasselblad Masters has also won various awards in this respect, and the German Luftwaffe use his photographs in their training manuals for fighter pilots. He was sponsored by Hampstead Council for an exhibition, and some of the work sold there, now hangs in Japan and America. On U-Tube various strangers have put his poetry to music, or song and one was even turned into a Hymn. He sponsors his own Website, Radical Rooney.com where he showcases his photographs with stories and articles. He holds a Class 'A' Amateur Radio licence, G4PXZ, and has a number of Patents to his credit. He has been a member of 'Mensa' since 2005, and holds an International Press Card. He hopes to publish his third book, "For the Love of Dog" before 2013. This is a devastating story of animal cruelty, written in a typical 'Radical' style, with a very surprising twist.

A year of being in contact with street dwellers

Author's story as he shares daily entries for a year as he volunteers at soup kitchens in a poor town in England. At times heartbreaking and at times laugh-out-loud funny as he shares the depths people go to and their ridiculous behavior. Some swearing. Provides daily weather report. Includes crimes listed in the paper. Some B/W photos, glossary at the end. Engaging read.

Books about differences between USA and UK

It is true that it covers a broad spectrum of US living,but I was a little disappointed to find that this book is mostly about covering differences between USA and the UK. It was not very helpful relative to other similar book, for me as one who came from a different country other than the UK. This book should have revealed that it is mostly written from the UK perspective. Had I known this, I would have chosen another book, not this one.

well-recommended work and well-recommended pilgrimage

I recently returned from a 3 week guided tour of the Pilgrimage Sites, using this charming book as my primary text. A pilgrimage is such a wonderful experience and this book can solidly help both your pre-trip planning and your pilgrimage experience, although if you are an armchair pilgrim who might never visit the sites, you will nevertheless find great enjoyment and value in this work. This book was selected by our trip leader, who is a prominent Buddhist scholar. On the positive side:

1. The authors provided accurate previews of the pilgrimage sites, IMHO. They not only list the four major ones, they nicely describe many smaller, endearing, out-of-the-way places (like Savatthi and Vesali) which are far less commercialized and surely far more authentic than the more famous places, but which take more planning to visit. You can use this book to budget your time so you can experience what are your personal must-see points.
2. The authors provide useful sections from the suttas associated with the areas they discuss. You will surely find the suttas "come alive" after you have visited the sites, so these sections are highly valued.
3. The authors are long-time practitioners, with perspective,experience, and enthusiasm. As fellow pilgrims, they understand these sites are more than just experiences for the tourist. They also list some practice sites, volunteer opportunities, etc.
4. You won't find many other books on pilgrimage touring in India (speaking of which, unless you have a great deal of "Indian street-smarts," unless you are a truly natural or experienced traveler, or unless you have gobs of time, I would strongly urge considering a group pilgrimage tour like ones you will find advertised in Buddhist journals).

The positive sides far outweigh the negative ones, but no book is immune to some criticism:
1. The book is relatively large. You'll find some of the bulk includes info about topics other than Buddhist sites, and although useful, such information may quickly become out of date and can better be found in websites or other guidebooks like LP (if you are weight-conscious, you can simply remove these sections from the book). Rev. Dhammika's text Middle Land Middle Way is more compact but lacks the sutta translations, and those are especially nice to have.
2. Preparing for a successful pilgrimage should include some introduction to "pilgrim culture shock" and the vast array of current events and conditions in India, and the book seemed a bit short here. I would certainly recommend providing a few blogs or websites, like timesofindia.com. UPDATE: The authors have provided a blogsite which can be accessed at pariyatti.org. Thanks.
3. I think the book underestimated the travel times/frustrations you may encounter. Roads are bumpy and congested, unexpected delays are frequent, and bureaucracy can be interesting, so you will be quite lucky to average 30 mph between most sites and may arrive behind schedule and pretty frazzled. On the other hand, the patience and equanimity of nearly all drivers i encountered are something Americans should envy, and the trip was well worth it!
4. The authors ignored the World Buddhist Center in Delhi, which was a good bargain for pilgrims and a relatively quiet and reverent place to get over jet lag (alas, after arrival in India you may need to stay in Delhi for a while to make travel connections).

Along with some research on modern Indian conditions, this is a fine book to help plan and conduct a pilgrimage. I found this book so valuable I do not hesitate to give it five stars.

as we travelled through the Bihar Province of India. The book provides the reader with information, helpful hints and personal anecdotes about the author's experiences. It is a wonderful guide for the traveller as well as for someone wanting to learn more about the life and history of Buddhism.

Lonely Planet is a great source for info on traveling!

Lonely Planet is a reputable source, would recommend this book (although may be a bit outdated). It gave me information regarding what I could expect when traveling to Australia for the first time. It was a great trip and I appreciated the information in this text ahead of time. Be cautious when traveling to Australia, it is SUPER expensive! I think breakfast for two was something like $60 US dollars and that was NOT anything too fancy....eggs, spinach, toast, and fruit.

I received this book with 4 completely blank pages in the Cairns section. which is the place we are going to be spending the most time!! and i have no idea which parts are missing so now i have to do separate research anyway. :(
