Please carry on each warm trip with your children with calm and happy. I was most intrigued by the wall paintings in the tombs in the valley of Kings, which depicted the buried dignity, and his interactions with the Ancient Gods. – The Gods were painted to be much larger than the general populous which led me to consider that they were not of this earth, that they were visitors from the stars, -- Aliens, -- Giants, -- The Watchers.

Keremeye'us - A Walking Journey Across North America

While caring for his handicapped elderly father, the Author fills the long silences planning for a great walking journey. Requiring a means in which to carry his equipment, he constructs a Rickshaw from scrap metal and used bicycle parts on the floor of the small apartment. When the time comes, the Author sets out on a trans-continental trek from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, pulling all he owns behind him in the Rickshaw. Though epic in its physical and mental accomplishments, the journey is full of laughter and reflection. At first only self interested, the Author soon finds he carries with him the infectious gift of inspiration. Keremeye'us is about simplicity, kindness and most of all it is about freedom in its most basic forms.

Everyone loves humour and having a good laugh. Just open this book whenever you feel a pick-me-up is needed or simply want a good laugh. The jokes are slanted towards open-minded adults and are not suitable for children. There are twelve chapters in the book - each one discusses a humourous segment of society. Still relevant

This little book was published in 2004. The Internet and the hundreds of thousands of websites on it are ever changing and fluid. Although I didn't check out all of the websites in the book, I was surprised at how many were still up and running from the ones I did!

As with any book that concentrates on online resources, with time and effort you can obviously find everything the author did. This compact reference though saves you time by having done the research.

A nice aspect to the book is the organization. It is organized by the basics which includes airlines, trains, buses, accommodations and more. This section is followed by themes and activities (sports, walking, health etc), a section on special accomodations (children, disabilities etc) and specialist holidays. The final section is country-by-country.

Yes, some of the websites have fallen victim to the economy, but the organization of the book will allow you to add on your searches to find that perfect online booking or vacation!

I had already purchased several useful guides on Wales, The Rough Guide to Wales and Wales by The Lonely Planet, both had their strongpoints, are larger versus this handy pocket size. I wanted more detail on Cardiff so I purchase this next. This pocket size guide has something I value a lot; more internet websites listing for hotels, other places of interest, with a succinct description. Naturally, it has a more expansive list of places to stay, dine, with price range coding. Also suggestions on what to sight see, as one would expect. It is well organized and also has information on the surrounding South Wales area. It has a short chronology of the history of the area. Nice city section and area maps are in the final pages. Limited black and white photos are interspersed in this guide, more would have delighted. This guide had information on local golf with websites. I am an avid golfer and have other golf guides that cover that topic, but did not have some of these included.

A book for perfect kids (are your kids perfect?)

This is a book for those parents blessed with perfect kids - you know: the ones that sit still, listen, behave, and obey impeccably all the time. The kids which all we folks with 'real' kids envy, or rather, secretly suspect to be drugged by their parents.

I am from the UK originally and I know from 1st hand kid experience that about 50% of these activities would be wholly unsuitable for any kid. Many or most of the others would require a freakishly compliant kid for the parents to escape without busting a blood vessel. As a local it was almost laughable how different my memories were from the author's promises, or how my expectations of an event/activity/place varied from the author's. Needless to say we didn't bother using valuable baggage weight when we went back to the UK.

Expect very few success stories for 'real' kids on 'real' days.

Lots and lots of useful information.

This is a great must-have for those who are planning to take their kids on a trip to England. Whether this is your first time or a repeat visit, this book is invaluable.

This excellent Cadogan Guidebook has chock full of up-to-date information on family-friendly sites. This includes attraction descriptions, costs, hours of operation and tips on how to get there. There are also tips on whether sites have special amenities for babies/toddlers. Each section (chapter) is divided according to geographic location - London, the southwest, south, Thames Valley, etc. The authors also rate their favorite or highly recommended spots. As a frequent visitor to the UK, I marvel at how much ground they cover. Everything from gardens, historic buildings, palaces, castles, zoos, parks, amusement centers, beaches, kid-friendly restaurants and shopping areas are covered in great detail.

My only complaint with this book is that it is almost completely text - no pictures and few maps. However, the book itself is almost 2 inches thick which really does show how much ground this book covers.

This book is an excellent resource for what to see and do on your upcoming trip. If you're into visuals, then I recommend that you get this book and the Eyewitness Great Britain guide. If you're planning to spend most of your time in London and only a couple of days in the countryside, then pick up the London version of this book instead. However, if you're planning to spend a lot of time trekking around London and the English countryside, this and the Eyewitness Guide combined should put you on your way to planning and enjoying a fun-filled family trip to England.

Not Perfect, But Worth A Read

This is the edition that my local library has, and it's the book I'm going to review. However, I have purchased the newer, 3rd Edition which shall be more up-to-date, one hopes.

I found this book useful. The author definitely has children in mind, although his exact advice isn't available for every age-range on every topic. He advises parent's of little ones to be careful in old trains as the windows can go all the way down. And he warns people that charter planes are a terrible choice for families, but advice on which site is best for which age group is frequently absent.

Still, the author does give an idea of what hands-on activities are available, and that's very, very helpful.

The book is written with a good dose of humor, which makes it a pleasure to read, and he tackles areas of Britain in a logical fashion, giving examples of what a day tour might involve. He talks about Passes (to save money) and restaurants, and the usual sorts of things that travel guides include.

Surprisingly, there was nothing about dress, nor much about hotels. BUT I'm glad I read this book --it gave me lots of idea for organizing my own expedition-- as is indicated by the fact that I purchased the newer edition. (I'm hoping he has another coming out this year or next.)

Worth a read.

Best Guide Book for Parents!

We have two toddlers, ages 3 & 4. We take this book whenever we set out on a trip around England. It's so helpful to find child-friendly restaurants (not all pubs will allow children because of alcohol license restrictions), free parks, and fun activities for the kids. Let's face it, even though I could spend a day touring a museum or castle, that's not exactly the kids' favorite activity. We've found petting zoos, nature parks, playgrounds and great restaurants with this book. It's easy to reference and not a bad size for throwing in a tote bag. It's made our days out much more child friendly!

There Is A Lot Of Information Between These Covers

Every parent thinks it, I wish there was a manual that came home with the baby. We have this beautiful baby and some of us have no idea what to do once our baby is brought home from the hospital. then we find that babies were way easier than kids. Kids are a whole other group. They now think and talk for themselves and we are challenged in a whole other way so I loved the title The Instruction Manual for Kids.

I love reading. I also love reading books about things I am interested in. I am interested in my kids and being the best parent I could be so I was eager to open this fun cover book and jump in. I sat down on the couch and opened it the words are small, the margins are small the headings are small. It seemed like a whole lot of reading before I even started.

While there are some really interesting sections like the nutritional requirements and that kids need water to live as well as the keep it super simple (Kiss Principal) idea which is don't over control things (which was a problem for me as a new mom); I felt that it the layout was a little different I would have enjoyed it more.

Kerri definitely covers a lot of interesting information and re-opens my parent mind to things that I believe but have put aside for a moment every once in a while like The Rights Of Childhood. Basically how kids have the right to be a child, run around and play games, laugh loud, cry, etc. It is how I parent but every once in a while you need the gentle reminder in the stress of your day.

The other section I wish more people would read was called Keep Your Language Clear and Polite. I think this is something that should be given to every parent. I remember my sister-in-law commenting on how polite I was to my kids. I would knock on their door even when they were 3 or 4 and say, can I come in or ask them to pick something up and with a please and thank you. It wasn't something I consciously thought about but if I wanted them to be polite I needed to show them how.

You can get a lot of prospective from this wise parent who is kind enough to put it all down in one place for us to read.

Parents -this book is for you!

The Instruction Manual for Kids - Parent's Edition seems to cover all the topics parents could possibly need, ranging from before they give birth until children reach adulthood. As the parent of 4 children (very close in age), Kerri has done an impressive job creating a user-friendly parenting textbook - complete with personal stories - to educate parents, calm their fears and inspire them to be the best parents and mentors they can be. She touches upon physical, emotional and even psychological topics that benefit both parent and child, boy or girl. This is a book every parent needs for their personal library. I highly recommend it!

Every parent should own this book!

After reading this book I gained a much greater perspective of how to manage and build my parenting skills. You can definitely tell that this book was written by an experienced parent. It's hard to say which was the more pivotal moment of William Gray's travelling career - surviving his first long-haul flight with toddler twins or clinching the coveted Travel Writer of the Year award in 2002. A member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, William wrote and illustrated his first book at the age of 23. Coral Reefs & Islands: The Natural History of a Threatened Paradise was highly commended in the Conservation Book Prize. A sought-after photographer, William supplies images to several leading agencies including Photolibrary, Travel Ink and John Warburton-Lee. In 1995 William accompanied Patrick Lichfield as guest lecturer on the Oriana's maiden Atlantic crossing and he now gives slide talks throughout the UK. Its a starting point...

How, how is it possible that a book called "Europe for kids..." would offer only 20 pages to the countries of Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Swizerland? No, not 20 pages per country...20 pages IN TOTAL! Germany, Austria, and Switzerland easily deserve 20 pages (or more) a piece!

If you are looking for a guidebook to the touristy spots your children might enjoy, this may not be the book for you. If you want a book which will offer you prices and opening hours to attractions this is also not the book for you; very rarely are either offered. This book appears to have *some* helpful information and a few age specific pointers; it would be a great resource from your local library when you begin to plan your trip. When you want to get down to the meat of planning, you won't find a lot here. There is simply not enough substance here to justify the $18 price (especially when you consider Central Europe is but a whisper in this book!); surely at that price you are really paying for the beautiful photos.

On the pro side, each chapter has children's book suggestions for each country/region. Would like to have seen a longer list as notable books were left off the lists! Also enjoyable were the children's Top 10 lists for several countries. We will certainly be referring back to these. Finally, it was nice to see the inclusion of some recipes for each country. Although any google search could locate similar recipes, having them in one location as you prepare for the trip is handy. This book also has a decent amount of information (comparatively) on Turkey and Eastern Europe with kids.

This book was published in the UK. If you are in the US and considering this book, note that all prices given are either in pounds or euro. Also, most of the travel agencies listed are based in the UK.

Not very useful

This book seriously lacks specifics. At best it offers rough ideas for things to do, but it is far too general. Lots of nice colour pictures taking up precious space, but I don't need someone else's beautiful vacation photos when I plan to go for myself. Hardly any useful maps, brief descriptions, and whole geographic areas left out. The author admits as much in the book, but even then it is a little thin on content.

As a North American, I was also a little put off by the book's very UK-centric nature: aside from the lingo, there is a strong focus on Britain/Ireland and sun-seeker destinations like Greece, Spain, and Italy. There is almost nothing about Germany and Switzerland. The different destinations and particulars for newborns and toddlers versus teenagers are barely touched upon at the start of each chapter. Again, lots of generalities and few details.

Overall, a waste of money for the price.

The Ultimate Traveling Companion Guide

Much like the Kids' series, the Parents' Travel Guide is exceptionally helpful in showing parents how to navigate the troubling twists and turns of traveling with children in tow. With useful maps, information to interest the kids, and lots of tips and tricks available, the Guide offers the most exhaustive and complete collection of sights and cultural experiences that no parent or child will want to miss out on. Any vacation can be improved by understanding the how-to of traveling with kids, and this series is one of the best for making that possible.

A friend offered me this book just before we left for a trip to Rome with my 10 years old boy and I must say my husband and I were very happy to have it. Main attractions of the Eternal city and nearby are very nice and efficient structured in daily visits, with great tips for kids to enjoy it as much as parents. Highly recommend!

I purchased this parents travel guide together with the kids travel guide. As Rome is so reach with places to visit, this guide has been a great help to us when we planned our family trip. The book is full of ideas and useful information that is relevant to the traveling family at a very reasonable price!

Long Ago and Far Away: James Taylor - His Life

No writer has interviewed James Taylor and his family in greater depth over the decades than the late Timothy White, former editor-in-chief of Billboard, and author of the international best-seller Catch A Fire: The Life of Bob Marley.

This edition has been updated by his friend and former Rolling Stone comrade Mitch Glazer and includes an epilogue about the memorial concerts for Timothy that James Taylor helped organize.

Interesting and well written

An interesting and well written book.

It starts with several chapters of family history, which I found slow going at first, but then came to see the author's point regarding family history and it's influence on the music.

The style of the writing seems to be a mix of impersonal description and fairly intimate information, which came across at times as dry. Nevertheless, interesting and worth a read.

On second reading, much less satisfied...

This book was completed shortly before author Timothy White died--much too young, at fifty--of a heart attack. I now wonder whether he'd really finished it, or whether this book was just sent into print anyway. There are a lot of loose ends in this book, which were explained to me in Sheila Weller's first-rate "Girls Like Us," a triple biography of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon. Weller and Simon say that Taylor family matriarch Trudy Taylor would not allow White to speak to JT's first wife, and consequently she came off as "neutral to negative" in this book. His strong-willed second wife, Kathryn Walker, was painted in glowing terms; they since have divorced and JT remarried.

I would suggest reading this book along with "Girls Like Us" for much more fully developed picture of an extremely complex man. Weller thrives on writing about relationships as well as musicianship. Her book has many details on JT's siblings, children, and fellow musicians. White tended to be more of a terse guy-guy writer. He loved to get the back story going back generations, as he did most successfully with the Wilson family members on his group bio of The Beach Boys, "The Nearest Faraway Place." So if you're not really interested in Taylor's seafarin' family, this book may not satisfy fully. Although you'll understand perfectly, after reading the tale of Dr. Isaac Taylor's lengthy missions in Antarctica that kept him away from his young family for many months at a time, how JT could come to write "The Frozen Man," in my opinion, his best song.

Great insight on JT and family

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Areas of great interest to me were his family history as well as the memories of his childhoood and young adulthood, his parent's relationship,and his many friendships with people I had no idea he was friends with, etc. I also enjoyed the section where he shared personal insights and info about various songs and what they meant to him. Great book.
