The Best Loser: Finding a Way Out
Many of us will go through life following a similar path, one that quite often takes us to the same place regardless of our upbringing, background or financial status. Depression can strike at any time in our life, how we deal with it becomes a personal challenge. Some people never defeat it, the way out for them becomes clouded. What started out as one man’s simple list of ten things he liked about himself resulted in the publication of this book. At times a light hearted and sometimes funny outlook on his life before and after leaving the army, a personal self-help book that transformed his life. If you have ever considered writing a book but thought you weren’t important or interesting enough, just one of life’s losers, then this is a must read book. We, parents think first the safety of our babies. In fact, most of our thought is how to make them comfortable while traveling. Too good I found this book online and purchased it right away. I’ve learned so many things about different way of the safety of our baby. Must read it too, to gain some information that you can apply in your daily routine. This book I recommend to all parents out there, to be more aware and careful always. Start reading now and secured your baby safety forever. Have a happy trip always.

Raising a baby is challenging but the author gave me the reinsurance that spontaneity is not something of the past, but rather a great adventure that awaits once we are prepaid well. Going on the road in and travelling with a baby in a RV can be fun and well structured. The books is filled with great tips on how to make it work and enjoying it travelling with a baby. From baby proofing to emergency guides the book gives you will need to be prepared and travel stress free.

We have an RV and we travel a lot using it but soon, we're going to have a baby and we were kind of worried it might not be the best idea to use it during travels because of the baby. Good thing I got this book to aid our dilemma. Luckily, this book suggested solid ways on how we could childproof our RV. We're starting customizing our RV now and we're very excited to travel with the new addition to our family.

I know personally Paul Gravett, the joint author - and indubitably the leading spirit - of this book, and his personality is a great part of the much that is right and the somewhat that is wrong, or at least problematic, about it. Paul Gravett is quite probably the nicest person on Earth. It is possible to imagine that there may have been, somewhere, some time, one person whom he did not like; yes, possible, but very hard. He could get along with Timon of Athens. He is himself charming and a complete enthusiast about his subject, never tiring of exploring obscure historical byways and discovering forgotten comics and creators. And this book very much reflects his character. One has the impression that no comic book or strip ever published in the three kingdoms has escaped being placed somewhere in these pages, with an appreciative notice and some particularly well-chosen panels. But that is also the problem. Paul loves EVERYTHING; and when everything is brilliant, then nothing is outstanding. Now, to begin with, not every comic objectively deserves the enthusiasm Paul bestows on it. Our impression on leaving the book is that of a blazing, multi-coloured carnival and riot of invention and white-hot fun; and only personal acquaintance could tell us just how commonplace a great deal of these strips really were. Conversely, it also tends not to give honour where honour is due: when BRISTOW or AUGUSTA or ANDY CAPP or PERISHERS don't get any more space than any other newspaper strip, how are we to know that in their case, and specifically in their case, we are dealing with avatars of the national English genius for humour? With deserving equals of the Goons and of the Pythons, of Terry Pratchett, of JK Jerome and PG Wodehouse and Charlie Chaplin? Is it fair, is it even sensible, to give little more space to MODESTY BLAISE, the most successful and one of the most brilliant British comics of all time, as to, say, the comics adaptation of JAMES BOND? Let alone place her, completely out of position, among the girl characters, instead than in its proper hard-boiled context? And what about Alan Moore? The Greatest Living Englishman, as Neil Gaiman calls him with only moderate exaggeration, one of the greatest comics writers of all time, the most outstanding creative force in comics after Jack Kirby, an influence that has spread all over the world - he should have his own chapter, if nothing else because of the enormous amount of brilliant work he has produced. In fact he gets no more attention than anyone else.
Perhaps the saddest failure, however, is the failure to bring out the neglected brilliance of several old strips. After all, Alan Moore and MODESTY BLAISE hardly need this book's promotion, and neither do ANDY CAPP or EAGLE magazine. But how is anyone to know that BUCK RYAN, of which we only see a single daily strip, was as good an adventure/detective strip as anything by Milton Caniff or Frank Robbins? Who will explain to the public that Dennis Collins of PERISHERS was one of the finest artists the artform has ever seen? And sadder still, if possible: there is a strip called JANE, which is remembered, if at all, as a particularly dumb piece of wartime nostalgia. In fact, the wartime JANE was a very mediocre and forgettable strip, with gimmicky humour always leading up to the protagonist losing her clothes, and uninspired drawing; but someone really ought to stand up and show comics fans, and the rest of the public, that, in the fifties, a man called Mike Hubbard took over JANE and made it an extraordinary achievement, with a light touch in the humour/adventure writing, and some of the most wonderful artwork I have ever seen. This is the work of a master, utterly forgotten in his own home country, while JANE's poor wartime pratfall live for ever in the dubious medium of WWII nostalgia.
Having said all that, this is still a worthwhile book. Its learning is fabulous, its enthusiasm for its subject is commendable, and the warmth of its guiding spirit can be felt in page after page. As an introduction to the field of British comics, it is well worth having.

This colorful volume reminds me of nothing so much as an "across the pond" version of "Comix", Les Daniels' early-70s survey of the then-virgin territory of American funny books. As in Daniels' book, Gravett and Stanbury lump together a dizzying variety of different types of British comics, ranging from hoary old classics to the most ephemeral of "countercultural" modern works. The comics are arranged by subject matter (kids, families, sci-fi, adventure, women, etc.), with each sequence of sample strips presented in more or less chronological order. The effect of this parallel-track structure (to someone not well versed in the subject matter, that is) is to somewhat muddy the waters on the issue of what, exactly, does constitute a "great" British comic. I rather suspect that the trendy likes of, for example, "S**t the Dog" and "Johnny Fartpants" won't hold up as well in future years as "Judge Dredd" or "Modesty Blaise", but Gravett and Stanbury treat each item in a particular collection of themed strips with more or less equal gravity. Adding to the neophyte reader's difficulties, many of the strips reproduced herein are reproduced at such a small size that one literally needs an optical aid to dope them out. This may not be much of an issue to the British reader who knows these characters and creators, but for someone who actually wants to read the doggoned - er -- bloody things, it can be a problem. The accompanying text carries a whiff of the overwrought in its attempts to plumb social meaning, but it can easily be skimmed over when things get too thick. The authors maintain a Web site, [...] which they claim includes "lots more fun and facts" (and, hopefully, larger font sizes). Overall, this is a reasonably worthwhile purchase for someone interested in broadening their panelological horizons.

Falling Through the Ice: The Path of a Zen Methodist
Why a journey from Zen to Methodism? Two friends embark on a dual path of discovery while driving from Portland to Denver. Hiestand's book explores looking for meaning in the diversity of organized religions and finding it in spite of the many "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde's" one encounters. Hiestands's description of his process from Zen-ism to fulfillment in Wesleyan Methodism shares a spiritual journey that invoked a deeper understanding of following Christ and the wholeness of God. He breaks through paradigms to the core of Christianity--Grace from God and living out loving each other. I re-read many passages in his book and am keeping it as a guide to remind me who I follow--and how I can live that love out.

This is a beautiful, well-crafted book. The author's journey is Everyman's in scope and fascinatingly unique in its particulars. He uses lyrical language to discuss with crystal clarity deep spiritual questions and truths, with a kick of humor to drive his points home. Topics range widely--from Jefferson Airplane to John Wesley, from Tolkien to Debussy--and he explores each one with an impressive intellectual discipline. At the same time, the book is easy reading, accessible and entertaining. I highly recommend it.

I loved this book. A very different way to arrive at Christianity. It was interesting and gave me new ways to think about being a Christian. What an interesting life! I think everyone should read this book.

Naked in the Driveway: Memoirs of a Motherhood Gone Wrong

Laura Fulton is a full time writer, mother, wife and PTA dodger. The former staff writer for Abu Dhabi Week magazine left her native USA for the United Arab Emirates in 2002 where she inexplicably convinced the tallest, best looking Australian guy at the bar to marry her. She has recently moved to a small town near Melbourne where she spends her time ironing, writing and trying to convince the PTA president that she's much too busy to bake pastries for the next school fundraiser. Before turning to full-time journalism, Laura taught high school English in Dallas, Texas and at an international in Abu Dhabi. While on maternity leave with her first child, she took on her first freelance job, finally giving her masters degree in writing a work out. Laura's forthcoming project One Moment in Time is a collection of firsthand accounts of the lives of grandmothers from around the world, stories that show how - more often than not - the experiences of women transcend time, place, language, culture and religion. Laura is also working on a novel scheduled for completion in 2013. She is still astounded that she's married with children and thinks she was a much better mother before she had kids.

Seems to me it's almost possible to teach parenting skills: you just have to go with what you think will work, or what you think you can get away with, and somewhere between the two you'll probably end up with kids that turn out ok. That's the subtext of Laura Fulton's book, despite the self-deprecating subtitle, and her children are going to turn out just fine if her parenting is as warm, entertaining and (sorry about this but sometimes you just have to use a word you'd rather avoid in a book review) wise as this book, a collection of anecdotes most of which originally appeared in some form in a weekly newspaper.
The thing about writing a column for a weekly publication is that you have to have subject matter that is interesting or entertaining or hopefully both, week in week out, and Laura clearly had very little trouble with that. It's not that her kids or her parenting are especially quirky; but you do need a particular way of looking at life to be a good columnist, to see the diamonds in the dust (and to be able to laugh when they turn out to be glass). Laura has that.
She also has a natural, conversational style which works well for the (generally) short pieces that make up the book. It feels like a series of fun conversations with a good friend, possibly over a glass of reviving Pinot Grigio (or maybe a mid morning latte into which a fly has just blundered to hilarious effect).

I love this author; I recall reading some of her columns while I lived in Abu Dhabi and like this book they were observant, smart and laugh out loud funny. Motherhood isn't easy and sometimes we get it wrong, and what I love about this book is that the author is unashamed about this. Thank you Ms Fulton for making that ok.
I've read that this author is now living in Australia. I really hope she writes a follow up to this book about moving down under, that's a book I would buy!
I bought this book on Kindle, but am now going to buy the hard copy, just so I can laugh all over again!

Sammy's Next Move: Sammy the snail is a travelling snail
Sammy's Next Move is a wonderful story about a snail named Sammy who lives around the world with his parents. He is a ‘third culture kid’, TCK or global nomad. He often moves to new countries and has to change schools and make new friends. Sammy experiences the feelings and thoughts common to children in similar situations. Sammy is a snail and so he carries his home with him wherever he goes, just as a third culture kid does by knowing that home is where their heart is! Look for more Sammy stories coming soon!
Helen Maffini is a ‘third culture kid’ herself who lived in Japan as a teenager. Since then she has lived in nine countries and has two third culture kids herself, Alexandra and Francesca. I bought this book for my 8 year old son as he was quite nervous about our upcoming move overseas. He really enjoyed reading about Sammy and he seems a lot more excited about the move now. Great book! I recommend parents buy it if they are facing a move to a new country.

Sammy the snail is none too chuffed when his parents announce they are moving to Japan.
He's only just got used to living in Italy and he's really going to miss his playmates, so the prospect of having to make new friends in yet another country is distressing and upsetting.
But thankfully young Sammy's an accomplished traveller and when his mum reminds him about their previous postings and how much he's enjoyed living in different countries, he warms to the idea of moving again.
Sammy's Next Move is written by seasoned expat and mother of two Helen Maffini and tells the story of what it feels like to be a Third Culture Kid, in a way that children will identify with.
It's a simple tale, engagingly written and very nicely illustrated and at less than 20 pages long, it's ideal bedtime reading for children and their parents.
With two pages of tips and project ideas for parents of TCKs, this is the perfect little book for any expat child about to embark on a new adventure.

We have longed to live an expat life for years. Now as that is looking more and more like a reality, we have wondered how we would prepare our child for the moves...plural. This book is perfect! And when I say perfect, I mean that the length is ideal for a bedtime or anytime story and the character, Sammy, perfectly embodies our ideals: home is where the heart is. Between our determination to treat this experience like and adventure and having Sammy to refer back to, it looks like the expat experience will be a positive and exciting experience for everyone involved.

David Walters has authored eight books. He travels through the U.S. and abroad, preaching at churches, camps, crusades and conferences. His area of ministry is to children, youth, parents, nursery workers, youth and children's pastors, and senior pastors. He has spoken at many national conferences along with many well-known charismatic and evangelical speakers. Rev Walters has also written in Christian magazines such as Charisma, Ministries Today, and Homeschool Digest.

This book is very helpful to explain to children just what a christian is. The chapters are short and easy to explain. The questions at the end of each chapter summaries the content very nicely.

"Being a Christian" by David Walters is a well thought out workbook style edition for kids. It is kid friendly with a high gloss cover, large varying, pink/purple/black print and cute cartoon illustrations.
The explanation of the Christian life directs the reader to think and understand without corny Christianese. It includes scripture verses ( some with explanatory paraphrases), stories to help teach and a "quiz" at the end of each "chapter". It is not a lengthy workbook but it packs in powerful Biblical facts. It even provides a good representation of the Holy Spirit's role in the Christian life.
One thing to note, it is clear this book is written for kids. It speaks about the child's need to choose to believe God for salvation and not rely on parents or family church going as his/her identity as a Christian. This is an exciting challenge which kids need to hear so that as they enter teen years and adulthood they have a personal faith in a personal Savior.
Also, please note contrary to the one low review there is no judgmental "black&white" teaching other than the obvious; there's only one way to heaven. If that is upsetting to someone then its doubtful that person has experienced the grace of God herself.
Don't hesitate to purchase this book if you're looking for a simple, clear way to reach a kid with the gospel.

Right at the get-go, it’s clear that David Rowicz’s ‘The Cancun Insider’ is for the traveller who does not want to compromise on enjoying a wonderful vacation destination such as Cancun, Mexico. And refreshingly, Rowicz has hit the nail on the head with this book: forget about all those other travel guides that seem to be so preoccupied with how to get where—‘The Cancun Insider’ is, to put it bluntly, all about how you can have a truly great time in Cancun.
Rowicz knows what he writes about—he has stayed in Cancun in exactly the same circumstances that you might be thinking about visiting it—on a limited budget. The author—who obviously understands where the reader may be coming from—leaves no stone unturned in really discussing everything a “tabula rasa” may need to know about the destination—from the local culture, to even cures for hangovers. And most importantly, Rowicz shatters the misconception that you can’t have so much fun if you’re on a shoe-string budget—in fact, you CAN, and you must. And with this book, it’s going to be a heck of a journey.
As if that’s not enough, Rowicz’s writing is pure gravy—he has a flair for entertainment, which is highly important for a “fun guide” like this. Highly recommend this book! But beware, I bought several kindle edition Cancun books and this is the exact same book as "Cancun: This is NOT a Travel Guide", strange thing is these books have different authors so how does that happen???? I'm complaining to Amazon!!!!

This is by far the best guide out there. Sure, this guide isn't for everyone... he even says it himself. If you have thousands of dollars to spend, only want to visit the biggest tourist traps, or if you want to stick with expensive (and overrated) restaurants, this NOT the guide for you. If you're like me, going with a family that is on a budget, that wants to really experience authentic Mexican culture and food, and have a lot of fun while you're at it, this is the perfect thing.
Although I'm "Gringo", I have lived in Central America for many years and so I'm familiar with the Latin American culture. However, Rowicz offered many insights that were unique to the Cancun area that I really appreciated, since I had never visited the Yucatan. Sure, he definitely has parts of the book that are geared to young, single adults, but he has overwhelming amounts of useful information for famlies and others as well.
In my opinion, the only thing that could make this Guide Book perfect is if he included more information of the surrounding cities of the Riviera Maya, like Playa del Carmen, Tulum, etc. He definitely has valuable information about these areas, but the central focus is on Cancun, just as the title would suggest.
I'll say it again: If you know you're not the type of the person that does not enjoy trying new things, experiencing new cultures, or if you have plenty of money to spend, this probably isn't the guide for you. But my wife and kids thoroughly enjoyed our vacation here and can definitely thank Rowicz for providing some great vacation ideas and tips.

Travel While You Work is Mish Slade’s third guide for fellow and aspiring “digital nomads” (a title she claims somewhat grudgingly, for lack of a better term). The follow-up to Travel Like a Pro and Protect Your Tech is longer than its two predecessors at more than 300 pages, although highlights from both previous guides are revisited (and expanded upon) in Slade’s latest work. In addition to Chapter 3’s sobering advice on information security and the bonus chapter providing her best travel tips, Slade offers street-tested tips and resources for settling in quickly, dealing with financial matters, optimizing mobile productivity, freelancing on the go, hiring the best employees, and running a location-independent business. Particularly interesting for those considering this lifestyle may be the appendices featuring interviews of other digital nomads - including three who travel with their children.
Slade’s self-effacing, whimsical style belies her sophistication as a writer, traveler, and entrepreneur. From getting through airport security with minimal fuss and bother to conducting remote interviews from (almost) anywhere in the world, Slade uses her quirky sense of humor and light-hearted anecdotes to make the pages turn easily. Relevant and practical advice is reinforced with examples, links to resources, and recommendations for additional research.
Readers who will find this book most useful are those who are either considering or just beginning a lifestyle of truly location-independent work, whether self-employed or working remotely for someone else. It may be less relevant for more experienced digital nomads or those whose lifestyles don’t involve frequent international travel, since Slade devotes a good bit of attention to topics like air travel and dealing with multiple currencies. As an experienced freelancer with (children and) a strong preference for ground transportation, I found myself skimming through sections on productivity tools and finding the best airfares, but I devoured other sections relating to communication tools and interacting with contractors. I appreciate Slade’s willingness to research and share solutions from various resources (sparing her readers hours of tedious legwork to find the information she compiles so neatly for us), as well as her commitment to giving credit where credit’s due (links to sources and providers accompany every topic).
If you’re among the vanguard of professional nomads, or your mobile office only needs to function within a limited area (your home country), you may not find this book especially helpful (in fairness, it's still a fairly comprehensive clearinghouse of information and advice for work-related travel). However, I highly recommend it for newbie digital nomads and those who aspire to - in Slade’s words - “manage and communicate with [a] team of staff and contractors around the world,” learn “the best methods for dealing with clients as a freelancer,” and develop skills for “maintaining productivity while moving around the world.”

First let me say, as someone with a desire to travel and work from anywhere, this book was fascinating. A behind the scenes (so to speak) look at how someone actually does it.
This is not a book about theory. It is the real "how-to" from someone who actually walks the walk and talks the talk.
The author has a very easy to read style of writing and I found the book to even be entertaining at times. (the author writes with wit and like that) I like books that are easy to read and are a "quick read" and this book does not disappoint.
I do not review many books but I felt I needed to make an exception because this book is on a topic that I am really interested in and studying currently. You will read this book and go back to it over and over again. You will be bookmarking so many links because you will want to remember them and find them when you need them and you WILL eventually need them. LOL
If you are a freelancer or internet entrepreneur, I suggest you grab this book. You will get tons of ideas as well as tools and resources that will make your life much easier as a digital nomad.

Hands down one of the best resources for someone considering taking their show on the road. This book is absolutely full to the brim of important information. While you can hunt and peck for a lot of this information online, it really is worthwhile to have it all gathered in one place. This really is an indispensable resource.
