4A Thorough Thoughtful Guide to a Charming City
By Priscilla Kibbee
Hanoi is one of my favorite cities in Vietnam and this compact guide will serve you well as you navigate its colorful streets. It contains 193 pages of up to date information on transportation, where to stay, day trips and other excursions as well as all the things Lonely Planet readers have come to expect. Maps, glossary of terms, language and more. Also of great use in a country which is so "foreign" to us is a section on etiquette, history and religion. Food in Vietnam is unbelievably good and the Guide includes an excellent section explaining some of the types and variety of dishes and eating etiquette. And, of course, a comprehensive listing of restaurants separated by type. Highly recommended.

4Reliable guide to an exciting city!
By Mrs. H. A. Smith
This book was extremely informative, all information is clear and concise and was easy to navigate through.
We wanted an easy to use, novice guide on what to do/where to go/what to see/where & what to eat etc. for a short break in the city and this book told us everything we wanted to know & more.
This helped us to plan a full itinerary for our trip prior to us arriving - and therefore, helped us to not waste a minute of our precious holiday time!
Have nothing really bad to say about the publication - it is well written, interesting & informative; without being too detailed/long-winded.
Would appeal greatly to music lovers - as it has a special section devoted to the famous Jazz Festival.

5It's Good, It's Good
By K. Johnson
It's good it's good. Being light weight and small this edition is convenient. Plenty of useful information. The maps are accurate and comprehensive. Consulate information, and arrive/departure info. is good. The central area of Saigon is walkable and you can get some good exercise while seeing local street and shop life while admiring the nice archictecture. Some recent historical notes on what happened where in the city piques the interest. There are many listings in this LP edition for additional reading on Vietnam, and these books can be picked up here in the city, thanks to master copying abilities and black market. Changes are taking place here rapidly, but the communist government remains paranoid

3Maybe useful for a trip to Goa or Goa/Mumbai, but not for one to Mumbai
By Brian Baker
I recently took a vacation to Mumbai and picked this guide up in addition to the Lonely Planet India guidebook. I was hoping this book would have extra information on Mumbai that the India book did not have, but the Mumbai section of this book turned out to just be the Mumbai chapter from the India guide with no noticeable additions. This guidebook also lacks info about trips to take from Mumbai in Maharashtra that was in the India book.

If you are going to Mumbai but not Goa, just get the India guidebook and pass on this one.

3Practical information on Goa and Mumbai
By Phil Hansotia
This is an excellent guide to practical information on the district of Goa, and the city of Mumbai. It describes both places with recommendations on hotels, sight-seeing, local customs and travel, but is short on history and other background information. The section on Goa is a bit more elaborate than the one on Mumbai. An excellent value for the price. I purchased a used volume (2009) and found it quite adequate.

4Lonely Planet is a great source for info on traveling!
By Lindsay S.
Lonely Planet is a reputable source, would recommend this book (although may be a bit outdated). It gave me information regarding what I could expect when traveling to Australia for the first time. It was a great trip and I appreciated the information in this text ahead of time. Be cautious when traveling to Australia, it is SUPER expensive! I think breakfast for two was something like $60 US dollars and that was NOT anything too fancy....eggs, spinach, toast, and fruit.

Lonely Planet Thailand's Islands & Beaches

As well as providing practical travel advice, this travel guide includes background information on Thailand's islands and beaches. To assist travellers in transit, this guide also covers Bangkok.

Destination Thailand's Islands & Beaches

If you fancy a holiday where the sun is as hot as a bird's-eye chilli and palm fronds whisper in the breeze, head to the glorious islands and beaches of southern Thailand. Close your eyes and imagine towering limestone islands, dripping with stalactites and ringed by shimmering white sand. Conjure up images of crystal-clear waters teeming with exotic fish, and steamy tropical jungles. Of course, you've seen it all a million times on postcards and tourist brochures, but Thailand is one place where the reality lives up to the ideal.

There are literally hundreds of tropical islands on both sides of the Thai-Malay peninsula. There are established backpacker hang-outs (Ko Samui) and paradise getaways (Ko Tarutao). The mainland has virgin jungles full of tumbling waterfalls and secret caverns, and hundreds of kilometres of immaculate sandy shoreline.

Other destinations may have white-sand beaches and azure seas, but where else can you combine the sea and sand with adventure activities - scuba diving with whale sharks, rock climbing on limestone sea cliffs and sea kayaking through mangrove forests and prehistoric caves?

Thailand is cheap and well organized, and the steady flow of travelers moving up and down the coast means that travel can be as comfortable or as rugged as you want it to be. If you want to escape the crowds, rent a boat to an uninhabited island and live on the beach. If you want company, head to Ao Phra-Nang's full-moon party. Add some of Asia's finest food to this heady mix and the only question you need to ask yourself is, when shall I go...?

4Wait for next version - No tsunami updated
By Pablo Nicolas Pecora
Despite all SE Asia - tsunami affected guides - say: "you can update online" you don't get lot of information on their website.

Practically half of the areas detailed by this book is affected by the tsunami. The information is good, but not certain due to all the problems in the area. I've been in the andaman beaches and the guide was usefull, but I would wait for next version of this book. Lonely Planet Thailand (the next version, tsunami updated) is ready in august 2005, I think. So it's worth waiting...

5A very helpful guide to a very beautiful part of the world
By Pretzels!
Although I didn't make it to half the places in this book, I certainly enjoyed reading about them, and more importantly, thoroughly enjoyed the places I did make it to.

Remember: this is the guide to use if you're only going to LOS (the Land of Smiles) to island hop. Use the general Thailand book if you want to see the mainland as well as the beaches (it will detail quite a few of the islands and beaches as well.)

5A Paradise awaiting the reader and the traveler
By Dodie Cross
I started reading Loney Planet years ago when I planned my trip to Thailand and have never been disappointed. I am an author and my memoir, soon to be released, takes place in Thailand in 1993. The beauty then and now has not changed in the outer islands. I would recommend anyone visiting Thailand to read this book first to get a feel of the country and its wonderful people.

1Lonely Planet disappointment
By Sue and Bill
We, too, were shocked with the inadequacies of this guide, (along with the Netherlands guide). What's happened to Lonely Planet? Maps were almost unreadable, information attached to the maps was confusing, streets there were incomplete, addresses were wrong, and the tone was opinionated and unhelpful. To top it off, one of the hotels that was editor's choice cancelled our two-day booking when a full week booking came along from someone else, and we weren't told. No apology, only a remark that we wouldn't like the room with someone else in it. Who selected this place for inclusion in the book with an extra recommendation?

4My 3 years in Belgium is ending ... this book was a big help!
By JohnnyC
All in all, in my 3 years living in Belgium, I found this a really helpful guide book. Prices are always wrong in guidebooks, but I found the contact information (web, address, phone) nearly always right, and the descriptions accurate.

You will be very challenged to find another guidebook that has this level of coverage of Belgium in its entirety, as most seem to focus on Brussels, Gent, Bruges, and perhaps Antwerp. Belgium seems to typically be an afterthought on most tourists' itineraries.

I really enjoyed the author's picks, both hotels and restaurants. What can I say to the other reviewer where the hotel unfortunately cancelled their booking because they found a group that would pay them more? Is that the authors' fault? No, welcome to Europe, and to Belgium, where the customer is always ... wrong!!

So you're browsing guidebooks, and wondering which one to get?

I would have to say, based on my experience using an earlier edition of this book for the past 3 years (I imagine they're pretty similar!), if you're swinging through Belgium for 2 days, and going to see Brussels and Bruges, this book is probably not the best for you. You'll probably do better with a thinner city-specific guidebook. But if you're going to tour around Belgium, or spend an extended amount of time in a city or two, then the in-depth coverage of this book is a real benefit.

One criticim I do have to echo: Lonely Planet, let's face it, is not known for its maps, and this book is no exception. They're good enough, and I've never NOT been able to find something, but sometimes the maps, er, well, don't necessarily reflect reality.

So all in all, this is a solid book, and if you follow my advice in paragraph 5, I think you'll be happy with it.

4Usual Great Standard from Lonely Planet
By Lisa Calder
I mainly use Lonely Planet for sites to see, city walking tours and information on the history. I use Trip Advisor now for accomodation and I think Lonely Planet needs to catch up, as people can research so much now on the internet so their several pages of accommodation are getting pretty close to redundant, they need to scale this back and increase information on interests in the respective city. This feedback is general across the Lonely Planet range and not aimed at the Belgium/Luxembourg book. The information given is easy to follow, but I did find myself flipping pages to read the special box text information a lot..

2The worst Lonely Planet I have read so far !
By Jochen
As much as I am faithul to Lonely Planet guidebooks, I was shocked by reading their edition of Belgium & Luxembourg. Not only did we have to wait 2004 to have a LP guidebook for those 2 countries (which must be after about all other regions in the world, even Antarctica, Papua New Guinea and tiny tropical islands), but it's not even half satisfying.

They should have kept the previous title "Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp", as there is frankly not much about the rest of the country. For instance, Belgium has some 3000 castles, but for some reason only 2 (yes, a miserable 2 !) are listed in the Lonely Planet. Same sparsity for the abbeys. Then, the book is heavily centered on Brussels and Flanders, as if the author didn't know more about Wallonia than the average occasional tourist. No mention of towns like Huy, Ciney or Gembloux - in fact they are not even on the guide's map ! No mention of the beautiful stone villages of the Condroz and Meuse Valley. It's like if they had written a guidebook about England without writing about the Cotswolds, Mendips and the country's many castles and stately homes ! It seems that the author is more interested in finding the best pubs and clubs in Antwerp than in historical and cultural sightseeing. There is more than lots of beer and legal drugs in Belgium !
