Wasted Years

A great value purchase. As with fine wine will get better with age. This his debut work a selection of short factional stories based on true events. He was born in middle England in the sixties he was educated through the British comprehensive education system through times of change in Britain. Here are some experiences told with real working class language and British humour. Taking you away from your world with great insight into his, it is a curious journey to take for readers of all backgrounds, as it has a heartfelt thread of realism and truth throughout. Life is no dress rehearsal, and when things go bad all we can do is push on forwards, pulling on any good vibration that may come our way. Easier said than done when you hit rock bottom. That said however, things could always be worse. Through drug or alcohol addiction for example, or the realisation that what goes up must come down, the thing is we only learn by making mistakes, the key is not to make a habit of it.

I love reading so it's rare that I don't finish a book much less not making it to the second chapter. Being a new dad, I thought I would really enjoy this book. Unfortunately I was mistaken, maybe it gets better later in the book. Just couldn't bring myself to continue reading without falling asleep.

4Still relevant
By Deborah V
This little book was published in 2004. The Internet and the hundreds of thousands of websites on it are ever changing and fluid. Although I didn't check out all of the websites in the book, I was surprised at how many were still up and running from the ones I did!

As with any book that concentrates on online resources, with time and effort you can obviously find everything the author did. This compact reference though saves you time by having done the research.

A nice aspect to the book is the organization. It is organized by the basics which includes airlines, trains, buses, accommodations and more. This section is followed by themes and activities (sports, walking, health etc), a section on special accomodations (children, disabilities etc) and specialist holidays. The final section is country-by-country.

Yes, some of the websites have fallen victim to the economy, but the organization of the book will allow you to add on your searches to find that perfect online booking or vacation!

4An inventive tale
By S. Robertson
I really enjoyed this book. The story is inventive and interesting and kept me involved all the way through. The author changes the point of view by using `first person' for the main character, and 'third person' for the rest, switching to each one so you see their perspectives and you don't miss any of the action.

I did feel that some of the characters' stories could have been fleshed out a little, that more background was needed, and some jumps in logic were required. That said, in a couple of instances a little less technical detail might have helped it flow better. However, all in all this is a truly enjoyable read.

As the book covers quite a few years in few pages, you can see the possibilities for more stories to fill in the blanks. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Atkinson.

This book started out at a full run and kept on going! It is full of drama and mystery. It kept me guessing until the very end. Also, I would have to say it was very original. I read a lot and this topic in itself was different and exciting. It's nice to get out of the same routine topics, characters, and settings . Thank you L.E. Fraser !!!! The Lucky Ones: African Refugees' Stories of Extraordinary Courage

The Lucky Ones: African Refugees' Stories of Extraordinary Courage by Anne Mahon

"Anne Mahon faithfully captures refugees' voices with raw authenticity, imprinting their lives onto our collective memory." -Lisa Shannon, author of A Thousdand Sisters and founder of Run for Congolese Women

"Canada has thousands of untold stories of the immigrant and refugee experience. Here is a well-selected and well-told sampling, gripping accounts of what it's like to overcome horrific obstacles and to live the dream." -Tom Denton, Director, Hospitality House Refugee Ministry

"Reading this book will help us bridge the gap with the refugees and will make us better Canadians as we appreciate our good fortune at the accident of birth. This is priority reading as we live in an increasingly complex Canadian society." - Art DeFehr, former representative of the UNHCR to Somalia

"The book's shocking first-hand accounts of survival will cause readers to bristle the next time they hear someone cast refugees as "fraudsters" or "just someone here to take our jobs." And reading about parents who were forced to run for the border without their children - let alone their passports - will cause people to question the government's dismissive terminology of bogus and illegal refugees." ? The Catalyst, Citizens for Public Justice Publication

In The Lucky Ones: African Refugees' Stories of Extraordinary Courage, Anne Mahon presents a collection of personal accounts of heartbreaking loss, extraordinary bravery, and the resilience needed to begin again in a new country. Candidly told in their own words, the subjects reveal the uplifting truth of their unbreakable human spirit. A wide assortment of men and women ranging in age from four to 73 represent a variety of African countries and backgrounds. Their compelling stories span from experiences in their African birth countries to their new home in Manitoba. These inspiring insights challenge assumptions and encourage understanding.  All author proceeds from the sale of this book will go to micro-lending opportunities and post-secondary scholarships for the African community of Manitoba.

Anne Mahon's interest in telling the stories of African refugees grew out of her dedicated commitment to Canada's newcomers. She has been involved in a variety of community organizations and was nominated for the Lieutenant Governor's Make a Difference Community Award for her volunteer service. She lives in Winnipeg with her husband and three children. This is her first book.

5The True Cost of Freedom
By Monique Lewis
In Anne Mahon's The Lucky Ones, a young Somalian boy is kidnapped and chained in a garage for 18 months, an Ethiopian reporter is forced from his home after exposing his country's corrupt government, families are separated during widespread genocides, loved ones die in refugee camps, and in spite of it all, they are miraculously saved. Some call it luck, others call it a blessing from God.

The 17 refugees' stories are not just about hardship, war and injustice, but of the innate human desire to survive at any cost.

What impressed me the most was that even though these men, women and children witnessed death and destruction, these traumatic events did not stop them from wanting an education. Some immediately picked up their schooling as soon as they reached a refugee camp. All were desperate to give their children a strong foundation that they can survive on. In Africa, it's not the clothes on your back or the home you live in that makes you great, rather it is the education you have.

"My dad would always tell my siblings and me, `I have no wealth to give you, but I'm going to make sure that you are educated. That will stay with you wherever you go.'" -Efrem, pg. 94

Their stories were also full of love and courage that knew no boundaries. The Lucky Ones recounts heroic acts of love and compassion in a culture built on a deep sense of community and necessity to help others, even at the cost of one's own safety and well-being. Now living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, each of the refugees give back in their own way from sponsoring other refugees, and helping them adapt to their new Canadian home, to raising awareness about the unnerving experiences African refugees have suffered.

The Lucky Ones breaks all slanted and ignorant stereotypes about the African refugee imbued in Western culture. Since reading this book, I felt more compassion for my immigrant neighbors and I'm curious about who they are, where they are from and what they have lived through. A big part of me feels guilty for the privilege I was born with and a desire to give money or make donations, but the best gift of all is to listen, which creates understanding.

"If we don't courageously learn about each other, we will find ourselves in the position of master and slave. We might be scared to call it that, but let's call it by it's name. As refugees, we continuously risk losing our identity. When we come here, to this new country we call home, yes, we come needy and weak, but we do not want to stay stuck in dependency on others. We want to become fully mature Canadians and as human beings." -Anonymous, pg. 163

2Kids Vancouver, a book useless to travelers to Vancouver
By Bob Bloom
I bought this book hoping to locate tourest attractions and not so touristy things to do with kids.
The book is like a yellow pages for kids with minimal descriptions, lack of concept ideas, or day planning.
For instance, the wonderful Stanley Park is covered in less than 1 page. If I didn't know about the Capilano Bridge, a traveler could miss it reading her book. It is covered in the neighbooorhoood section with 1 paragraph.
However, if you want to know about the parks or day care in each part of the city, then you have found the book for you.

Claret and Blue Blood: Pumping Life into West Ham United

From the World Cup-winning days of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters to highly acclaimed modern-day heroes such as Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe, West Ham United supporters have always had the greatest affection for homegrown Hammers. Since the 1960s, talents such as Trevor Brooking, Tony Cottee, Paul Ince and Rio Ferdinand (who has twice hit the headlines as the world's most expensive defender following his move to Leeds and Manchester United) have been nurtured and brought through the club's ranks, ensuring the Hammers can rightly lay claim to having one of the country's most fruitful youth policies.

In this revised and fully updated paperback edition, Claret and Blue Blood brings together all these characters and others for the very first time, including new chapters on Anton Ferdinand, Stephen Bywater and Kevin Horlock. Using exclusive new interviews, the authors present biographical pieces that collectively tell the story of West Ham United's evolution over the last half-century. Focusing on each player's roots, development and personal achievements, Claret and Blue Blood is a unique book that features key characters, candid conversations, successes, failures and controversies as it explores the very essence of West Ham United.

By Kristian Valdini
If ever I required someone to give serious granulation on the history of West Ham...Ben Sharrat seems to be the man.
Ben ensures maximum buy-in from the reader with some superb strategisation simply squaring the circle that is West Ham.
I eagerly await Ben's next book, having heard through the grapevine that it will focus on the key metrics and standardisation of herding cats. Lets hope he runs this idea up the flagpole to see who salutes it before coming to a landing on it, as there is sure to be much knitting of fog before he sees blue skies.
Great Stuff Ben.

Bully Boss

Bully Boss is a positive, inspirational read about facing the challenges related to workplace bullying, manipulation and maltreatment. It is a frank and open account about experiences that are often suppressed and unnoticed. Bully Boss lays bare the severe angish caused by an oppressive boss. At times, the author Helen Christina became bitter and angry but she maintained a gutsy determination to pull through. Bully Boss describes her emotions and experiences and relays the critical lessons she learned on that journey. Bully Boss is written in a conversational and, at times, humourous style. It is ultimately a story of hope and redemption. Bullying occurs in every sector, every profession, every career and at every level. Workplace bullying is endemic, but Helen shows us how an ordinary person, a working mother, made it through her insidious work-related crisis with sheer grit and determination.

5Helen Christina's Bully Boss
By Hudson Kay Riley
This is a must read book for any professional in the field of Human Resources or Talent Aquisition. It's especially helpful if you or a friend have worked or are working for a bully boss. The Bully Boss validates that violence occurs in the work place. It's extremely difficult to acknowledge someone is bullying you. It's difficult to explain how it begins, who the bully targets and how it effects your life, day to day and long term. Helen Christina takes this prevassive problem and through personal accounts articulates bully behavior.
What a comfort to know you're not alone. I hope you'll buy this book for yourself and someone who could use a little comfort. It's a keeper!!! unless you give it to your boss at your exit interview.

4Good read
By R. Milhench
This novel is about the hardships and endurance of a man who at every hurdle turned them into a challenge. Like every story there are good guys and bad guys, the bad guys in this were the the people who where supposed to love and encourage him, his family. Treated as a slave in his own home then thrown out on street with nothing but the clothes he stood in, made me appreciate what I had whilst growing up and how easy I had it. Unbelievably betrayed by his friends, but even more unbelievably betrayed and bullied by his wife and her family. This book is shocking and captivating and makes you angry at an education system that failed him so many times, whilst his network of support at home failed him every time.

Maps, glossary of terms, language and more. Also of great use in a country which is so "foreign" to us is a section on etiquette, history and religion. Food in Vietnam is unbelievably good and the Guide includes an excellent section explaining some of the types and variety of dishes and eating etiquette. And, of course, a comprehensive listing of restaurants separated by type. Highly recommended.

2Mostly Disapointing, Lacking Major Ports of Call
By Ronald Anderson
I made this last minute purchase becasue I had not adequatly prepped for my med cruise. One positive is that the Roo recommendations were quick and easy find. Unfortunatly, the book did not cover half of my ports of call including beautuiful Chania - on the island of Crete, Greece; Bodrum, Turkey - a huge tourism port; and Kusadasi, Turkey - the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus. For Istanbul the guide did have good advice to stroll from Taksim Square to the Galata tower but lacked the tip to take the oldest subway in the world on the way back back to avoid the steep climb and just for the experience of it. (http://www.wittistanbul.com/magazine/how-to-avoid-the-steep-climb-to-taksim-or-cihangir/) The guide also lacked the tip that from the cruise port, all city destinations are up a steep grade so don't try it on foot. Think of San Francisco grades but steeper. In all you get what you pay for. Next time I will be less frugal and get a name brand guide.
